- What is Teachers Leading Change?
- TLC is a 2-year Teacher Leadership cohort for teachers interested in assuming leadership roles, but not necessarily interested in becoming an administrator. Structured around 2 action research projects, participants will engage in the continuous improvement process based on a problem of practice that they have identified from within their classroom/site/school/district/state.
- What will we learn in TLC?
- While the action research process is ongoing for all TLC participants, they will also advance their competencies and understanding of coaching, mentoring, observation and feedback, resistance, leadership styles and beliefs systems, among other relevant content that will help them develop as leaders who could serve in classroom-based roles (IL, DL, grade level leaders) as well as site and district based roles (coaches, IS’s – which are all Teachers on Special Assignment, TOSAs
- How do we share our Action Research?
- At the end of year 1 participants will present to the class. This year participants are doing ignite speeches (Click here for more information about ignite speeches) to the other participants in the cohort, at the end of year 2 participants will present their action research findings to an authentic audience.
- What are some examples of Action Research Projects?
- We have some examples of past action research projects on our website click here
- What is the time commitment for TLC?
- We have little to no “homework” assigned for classes, and there are multiple opportunities to develop your action research during class. However there is an expectation that during the course of the year you implement your plans in your class/school/district and depending on the scope of the action research you choose, this may require additional time.
- What do you suggest if I AM interested in eventually becoming an administrator?
- We suggest you apply to the Washoe Academy of School Leaders (WASL Click Here) program. It is a great opportunity to learn more about administrative leadership in WCSD!
- How many credits is TLC?
- 6 state credits. 3 for year 1 (issued in June of first year), 1.5 for summer institute (issued in August of year 2), and 1.5 for year 2 (issued in May of year 2).
- Are they graduate or state credits?
- These are state credits, so they are equitable to in-service and represent 90 hours of learning.
- Can you use the credits for moving over on the payscale and/or licensure?
- Yes! Both!
- How much does TLC cost?
- TLC is free!! Sponsored by Northwest Regional Professional Development Program (NWRPDP)
- Where and when are the meetings?
- What if I have to miss a meeting?
- Attendance for TLC is extremely important. We ask that before considering applying you review the calendar to ensure your availability, while we understand life happens sometimes, the community that is built within the cohort is extremely important to the process, and each year the number of applicants to the cohort far exceeds the available spots. With that being said we can share that we have built into the schedule 1 make-up day each year, and allow for ONE additional day to be made-up through an article review.
- Is year 2 different?
- Yes, year 2 meetings are shorter and there are fewer of them. Year 1 is a total of 45 credit hours (plus 1 sub day and the summer institute) and year 2 is 22.5 hours.
- What do we do for the summer dates? Are those for both years?
- Each year we hold a Teacher Leadership Summer Institute where we bring a national educational leader to guide learning for the group. Previous speakers have included Peter DeWitt, Jennifer Abrams, Zaretta Hammond, and Stephanie Rome. These immersive summer institutes have been excellent learning opportunities. There is a competitive application process for acceptance into the Institute, however as a TLC participant you are guaranteed a spot!!
